A native of the Drakensberg Mountains of eastern South Africa, Albuca shawii produces waxy yellow bell shaped flowers in profusion throughout the summer which exude a beautiful fruity fragrance described as reminiscent of pineapples. The succulent needle like leaves have interest themselves because they also give off a sweet smell when brushed against. Ideal for a pot on the patio, but brought in and kept dry all winter. Summer flowering to 18ins.
Planting instructions
Plant 4" deep in a pot or sunny well drained rockery. Keep dry all winter and frost free. Albucas grow well in a cool greenhouse protected from all but slight frost either in a large tub or in the ground. As A.shawii is fully dormant in the winter it is easier to overwinter it as a dry bulb and will make a great patio plant to flower in the summer.
