Allium carinatum pulchellum
First described in 1898. Found in the wild in central Europe and Turkey and into the former USSR. These are not really winter dormant and in the autumn the leaves begin to grow away. The bulbs are brown and membraneous, without much storage so the resting phase is shorter. The leaves are clasping to the stem, very narrow. The flower stem is erect, about 12” (30cm) tall in early summer but the flowers first face skyward and then as they mature droop down with the yellow pollen tipping the stamens. As they get fertilised they stand erect again. In this form the flowers are purplish-rose pink. Seed is viable and in light soils spreads quite easily.
Planting instructions
Plant into a sunny site and in lighter soils if you want them to seed. Bury them just deep enough for firm anchorage, about 3” (7.5cm) apart.
