Creamy white flowered Allium with a dark ovary, flowering in June.
Order Code: 53-24
Allium nigrum
They are Mediterranean in origin and synonymous with A.multibulbosum. First described by Linnaeus in 1762. The name comes from the greenish-black lobed ovaries in the centre of each flower. Some are blacker than others! The head is otherwise formed of 20-30 large, open, creamy white flowers and does not form a complete ball, but is more flattened at the top. The flower is held about 24” (60cm) from the ground over grey green basal leaves in June.
Planting instructions
Plant with 3-4” (7.5-10cm) of soil over the bulb in a sunny well drained soil about 4-6” (10-15 cm) apart where they will get a dry summer rest. Dot them about informally, perhaps with purple Gladioli or Cow parsley?
