Camassia leichtlinii Pot Luck
Camassias of different sorts grow in the wild in great numbers in moist meadows in the western USA. C. leichtinii grows principally in mountain meadows, and prefers full sun, although it tolerates partial shade fairly well. The buds at the bottom of the raceme open first, and the flowers at the top will still be seen a month later.
We have been growing and selecting a number of C.leichtlinii with the intention of raising a pink strain. On the way we have produced a bed of plants of variable colours which we offer on a 'Pot Luck' basis. The pink strain is still some way off.! May flowering 36" (90cm), colours will vary.
Planting instructions
Bulbs should be planted 4-6” (10-12cm) deep , 9” (22cm) apart in any reasonably well-drained soil in groups of 5 or more. They like a moist spring and flowering, followed by a dry dormancy. Let the leaves start to lose colour before cutting them back. They prefer not to be disturbed once established. The flowers are good for cutting, though beware the falling petals staining a white table cloth.
