A natural hybrid with some extra vigour and stature.
Order Code: 74-4
Chionscilla allenii
A stout hybrid between Chionodoxa forbesii and Scilla bifolia that was first noticed and described by James Allen of Shepton Mallet in the late 19th Century. In garden situations this hybridisation can be quite common, but it needs a good eye to notice! The bulbs are bigger and they produce quite an imposing little plant with brilliant blue flowers which deepen in hue as they age. The leaves are narrow and lance shaped. They are very suitable for the rock garden or raised bed where they can be admired, in lighter soil which is sunny in spring and shaded in summer. This form was much admired in the RHS trials of ‘Little Blue Bulbs’ in 2003.
Planting instructions
Plant 2” (5 cm) deep in well-drained soil, lightened with leaf mould with additional grit if heavy. They do well in slight shade in rock gardens or the front of a border where they will not be disturbed. Brilliant blue flowers in March, 4” (10cm) tall.
