Crocus sieberi tricolor
The RHS Award of Garden Merit
C.sieberi tricolor was first found on Mount Chelmos in the Pelepponese and the collected form was increased from a stock obtained from E B Anderson in 1966. The bud bursts through the ground before the leaves have really developed. It is conspicuously three banded, with a lilac tip separated from the yellow throat by a white band. When fully opening in the sun, the concentric rings of colour, with orange yellow stigma and stamens in the centre are eye-catching. The corm will produce 4 or 5 flowers, so it produces a rich thicket of colour. C. sieberi wants richer soil than other crocuses, and needs moisture with good drainage. Small but bright banded flower in February / March.
