Species of Dieramas can be found from the southern Cape northwards through eastern Africa to Ethopia and from sea level to the the top of the Drakensberg escarpment at 10,000'. Despite this wide geographical range they are restricted to moist grassland as their major habitat. Dierama pendulum was collected by C.P. Thunberg in 1772 near to Humansdorp on the Kromme River in South Africa. Thunberg was a student of Linnaeus and eventually succeeded Linnaeus's son as Professor of Botany at the University of Uppsala in Sweden. The plants produce thick clumps when happy with thick grass like tussocks of foliage from which come the arched flower stems. Papery pink flowers opening in sequence along the stems.
