Yellow flowers in May, black berries and golden foliage in autumn.
Order Code: 30-6
Disporum sessile subsp. flavum
Disporum are fast growing, rhizomatous perennials, from North America and East Asia, this form coming from Korea and Manchuria, where it grows in wood on hillsides. Looking much like a Solomon’s seal with showier flowers, it grows well in part shade with well-draining, humus-rich soil. The plant emerges in late spring with one to three flower buds immediately visible, slowly unfurling to reveal the deep yellow tubular flowers about 1” (2.5 cm) long in May, and grows rapidly to about 2 ft (60cm). Over time its creeping rhizomes will create a clump of ground cover with the flowers held above the foliage, which is green in summer and turns golden in the autumn, when black berries also develop.
Planting instructions
Plant the rhizome 3-4” (7-10cm) deep and at 12” (30cm) spacing in humus-rich soil in a shady or part shady position.
