Eucomis comosa Cornwood
South African in origin and commonly named the Pineapple Plant as the topknot of leaves above the flower head does resemble that fruit. They appear above the ground only after the frosts have gone and go dormant with the first autumn frosts so when planted deeply can be regarded as being hardy in most of the UK. Selected from the Eucomis comosa group, this is a shorter but very distinct and consistent strain with long stems covered in hundreds of pale creamy flowers from which the distintive purple-black ovaries shine out like rows of buttons. Very attractive to insects flowering in August and September 18" tall.
Planting instructions
Plant 6" deep, 18" apart in well prepared soil in the garden or in pots in a sunny site. Water well in summer. Allow 2' spread.
