Eucomis comosa Sparkling Burgundy
South African in origin and commonly named the Pineapple Plant as the topknot of leaves above the flower head does resemble that fruit. They appear above the ground only after the frosts have gone and go dormant with the first autumn frosts so when planted deeply can be regarded as being hardy in most of the UK. This is a selection from with the Eucomis comosa group. These are distinctive for their dark burgundy red / olive brown stems and leaves, These are most noticeable when planted in the sun (and will be lost in a greenhouse) and early in the season. In the summer the foliage is deep olivey green/brown. The whole effect is very dramatic and offers plenty of opportunity for intersesting plant combinations or planting in contemporary containers with coloured mulches. Flowers in August / September to 24" tall.
Planting instructions
Plant 4-5" deep in a sunny spot in well prepared soil or in pots. Keep well watered in summer. Must have direct sunlight.
