South African in origin and commonly named the Pineapple Plant as the topknot of leaves above the flower head does resemble that fruit. They appear above the ground only after the frosts have gone and go dormant with the first autumn frosts so when planted deeply can be regarded as being hardy in most of the UK. We believe that much of what is sold as E. pole evansii is really this - but this is we believe the correct name.Yellow-green flowered on stems, some 3" thick. Late flowering - but that is not unexpected given what they turn into! September / October 12".
Planting instructions
Huge bulbs to plant deeply in full sun and with 5-6" of soil covering the bulb to aid support of the stem or in big well watered pots. Allow 2' spread.
