Fritillaria persica Ivory Bells
A somewhat rarer selection of F. persica, with up to 30 ivory white bells growing up a tall stem (about 30” or 75cm) with slightly twisted grey-green leaves and a pleasing grey stem which can be spoilt by handling. As its name suggests it is native to Iran and also to Turkey, Syria and Cyprus where it grows among rocks and shrubs on hillsides. In the garden it therefore needs excellent drainage but will grow well in soil rich in compost that never fully dries out. The slightly twisted, greyish-green leaves alternate all the way up the stem and have a grey-plum bloom, which can easily be spoilt by any contact. It grows to 30” (75cm) or taller and may need staking. It may take some time to flower reliably and starts early into growth, so it can be damaged by frosts.
Planting instructions
Plant 8” (20cm) deep in rich soil which receives the sun in the spring and summer. It will start early into growth. And would benefit from high potash liquid feeding whilst in growth to replenish the energy used.
