Fritillaria persica
F. persica, as its name suggests is native to Iran, and also to Turkey, Syria and Cyprus. The best form is F. persica Adiyaman, named after a town in N Turkey. It grows well in well-drained soil rich in compost that never fully dries out. The flowers are held in long racemes of up to 30 narrowly bell-shaped somewhat conical flowers, deep plum-purple, about ¾” long with a waxy bloom. The slightly twisted, greyish-green leaves alternate all the way up the stem, just leaving the panicle of flowers clear at the top, and have a grey-plum bloom which can easily be spoilt by any contact. It grows to 30” (75cm) and may need staking. It may take some time to flower reliably.
Planting instructions
Plant deeply in rich soil that receives the sun in the spring and summer. It will start early into growth and would benefit from high potash liquid feeding whilst in growth to replenish the energy used.
