Helleborus orientalis "Pot Luck"
All the orientalis forms are very hardy and will grow in sun or shade. They are long lived plants and will reward you for a little effort in planting them with some organic matter to feed on. They flower in the early spring, getting better and better. You can trim off all the old leaves in January or February to show off the flowers better and to stop the carry over of any disease onto the new emerging leaves - but only on the orientlis forms.
Planting instructions
Heavier clay soils seem to offer no serious obstacle to Hellebores and most H. orientalis are perfectly happy in sun or shade where they compliment the spring display with their long flowering season. These are offered as potted plants to be planted in the ground in the autumn to flower in the spring, allowing about 18" (45cm) between plants. They are quite heavy and are probably unsuitable to be sent overseas.
