Order Code: 131-35
Tulipa sprengeri
Absolute stunners, difficult to grow commercially so expensive, but you shouldn’t need many to grow them yourself given time and the right circumstances.
The original population in N Turkey has not been rediscovered and in fact it may be extinct in the wild. Who discovered or collected the original plants or seed is not clear. It now grows in many different garden situations, and there are reports of it successfully colonising both shady peat gardens and hot sunny walls. It looks wonderful in dappled shade when, in early summer, individual shafts of light pick up the rich red and gold. It seed extensively but the seedlings resent handling till nearly at flowering size, hence in commerce are difficult to increase. Patient and restrained minimalistic gardening can result in quite large naturalised colonies in 4-5 years. They have shiny green leaves. The flowers are single with the breaking buds a lovely buff gold colour with the contrasting flash of crimson within. They have golden stamens. The whole may be 15” (40cm) tall, flowering in late May and early June.
