TULIPS
The process towards choosing the right tulip shouldn’t be too daunting in spite of the long list that we offer. We would suggest that you pick from several different groups, that way you’ll spread the flowering time and you will also land up with ones that are different. And everyone has different tastes in colour so Go Wild!
Species and dwarf tulips - These have small bulbs typically the size of an almond. Their real benefit comes from their bright colours at flowering in late April and early May. They are sun lovers and don't want it too wet. They should be planted quite close together.
Kaufmanniana Tulips - Early flowering typically February or March with large flowers on reasonably short stems. Louder colours generally so suitable to plant in containers to greet your friends and the warmer sunshine. They should be planted 5" apart as the flowers open widely in the sun. They all have good leaf markings too.
Greigii Tulips - Late March and early April flowering with wonderfully marked leaves. These are great for planters too or could be used in front borders to give them an early "lift". They need a sunny and well drained site ideally planted about 5" apart.
Fosteriana Tulip - Earlier flowering than the main Tulip flush, large flowered and loverly colours which aren't too loud. Planted about 5" apart in containers or borders.
Midseason tulips - An assortment of tulips from various groupings which have roughly the same flowering season in mid to late April. Plant about 5" apart in open garden borders or containers.
Fringed Tulips - First popular in florists shops these are fringed by frills along the edges of the petals, they are not just frivolous though. they provide a contempory twist.
Parrot Tulips - Exuberance is their great strength with flowers that seem to be overfilled and overflowing with frilled or fluted petals. Dramatic and wonderful for a fantastical flower arrangement.
Single late tulips - These are the later flowering group of tulips with elegant shapes and longer stems.
Lily flowered tulips - Most of these have pointed tips and that refined hour glass shape, waisted in bud and opening up in the sun. They are great in the borders and in tall containers which exagerate the stem length.
Viridiflora tulips - Multicoloured with vertical colour banding some of these exhibit complicated colour patterning, like an artist's mixing pallette. In the borders they provide graet opportunities to create subtle combinations.
Double flowered tulips - Also known as the paeony flowered forms. these tend to be late flowering with rounded flower shapes filled with deep layers of petals.
