Prepared Hyacinths - For December and January blooming under the correct conditions. These are suitable for forcing for Christmas flowering. The process of preparation means that these are not available until early September.
They need to be potted by the end of September with the tips of the bulbs just showing in a loam-based potting compost such as John Innes No 2 (use bulb fibre if planting in bowls). Keep in a cool, dark place at a temperature no higher than 7ºC for at least 6 weeks to allow the roots to develop. When the shoots are about 1" (2cm), they can then be brought into increasing light and temperature. Water carefully to avoid wetting the shoots and waterlogging the compost. Too much heat will make them flag and flop. After flowering forced hyacinths can be planted in the garden where they will flower in the spring in subsequent years.
