Alstroemeria ligtu hybrids

The Peruvian Lily is native to Chile, Peru and western Brazil. Alstroemeria seeds were first collected by the Swedish naturalist and friend of Linnaeus, Clas Alstamer on an expedition to South America in 1753. The plants could be apricot, cream, pink, yellow or occasionally white in lovely combinations. The leaves on all Alstroemeria are resupinate – twisting upside down, so what appears as the upper leaf surface is in fact lower one. Planting Instructions

Plant 2-3" (50-75 mm) deeper than currently potted and 24" (60cm) apart on a gravelly cushion to increase the drainage below them. Best planted in a warm sheltered and sunny site to establish themselves. Slugs can find the young shoots attractive.  They will grow in well drained soil or heavier soils provided they are not waterlogged. It is hardy and deciduous but might need some protection during the coldest of winters. In colder areas it will benefit from planting near a south facing wall which is a good backdrop to the flowers anyway. Varied colours will result, they are about 24-36" (60-90 cm) tall in mid summer and good for cutting.
