Butterflies love these egg shaped heads (and at their peak they are about the same size). They emerge as tight deep green buds in June, turning purple from their tips through July and swaying in the summer breezes on long wiry stems. Woven through a summer border, often as rivers of colour, they visually ‘tie things together’.
These pots of Allium sphaerocephalon should be planted as single units, you should not break them up. Plant them a little deeper than currently potted (2-3" or 50-75 mm) and provide them with sunny conditions in any fairly well drained soil. Firm them in and water to get them established. They grow fast to reach about 24" (60 cm) or taller flowering in the summer with egg shaped green buds which turn purple from the top and swell. Very attractive to insects and bees. They die down in the winter naturally to do it again another year. if you have more than one pot allow about 12" (30 cm) between clumps.
