Lavender ‘Hidcote’ is one of the best-loved English lavenders, prized for its richly scented foliage and deep violet-purple flower spikes that appear in summer and are adored by bees and butterflies. Naturally compact and tidy, it forms a neat mound of silvery-green leaves, making it perfect for edging paths, planting in borders, growing in pots, or creating a classic fragrant hedge.

As well as looking gorgeous, lavender is brilliantly practical: it’s drought tolerant once established, thrives in sunny, free-draining spots, and is a superb choice for low-maintenance gardens. The flowers are also ideal for cutting and drying—pop them in vases, make simple dried bunches, or use them for crafts and scented drawers. A 2L plant gives you a strong, well-established start, so you’ll get impact more quickly in the garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or early autumn, when the soil is warming (spring) or still warm (early autumn). Avoid planting into waterlogged or frozen ground.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with very well-drained soil. Lavender thrives in lighter soils and is ideal for gravel gardens, path edging, herb gardens, raised beds and pots. It dislikes heavy, wet ground—good drainage is the key to success.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant at the same depth as in the pot, with the crown level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart (closer for low edging, wider for individual mounds).
  • Soil Prep: If soil is heavy, improve drainage by adding horticultural grit or planting into a raised mound. Avoid rich manure—lavender prefers leaner soil.

Watering:
Water well after planting, then water regularly for the first few weeks while it establishes. Once settled, Lavender is drought tolerant and needs only occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. In pots, water when the compost has dried slightly.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Prune annually after flowering (or in early spring), trimming back by around one third to keep plants compact—avoid cutting into old, woody stems.
  • Deadhead spent flower spikes to keep it tidy and encourage fresh growth.
  • In winter, ensure plants never sit in wet soil—drainage matters more than cold.

Top Tip:
For a beautifully fragrant edging, plant Lavender ‘Hidcote’ in a sunny line and clip lightly each year to maintain a neat, dense shape. It’s also excellent near seating areas or doorways where you’ll brush past and release that classic lavender scent.
