Lavender ‘Toscane’ is a gorgeous, compact variety that brings a real touch of Mediterranean charm to the garden. From early to mid-summer it produces masses of richly coloured, violet-purple flower spikes held proudly above neat, aromatic grey-green foliage. Not only does it look and smell incredible, it’s also a magnet for bees, butterflies and other pollinators—making it a brilliant choice for wildlife-friendly planting.

‘Toscane’ is especially valued for its tidy, rounded habit and strong flowering, which makes it ideal for pots and containers, edging paths, low hedging, or planting in sunny borders. Like all lavenders, it thrives in sun and free-draining soil, and once established it’s impressively drought tolerant. A little sunshine and good drainage are the secrets to success—and in return you’ll get months of colour, fragrance, and a plant that looks smart all year round.

Fun fact: Lavender has been grown for centuries for its scented oils and has long been associated with calm and relaxation—so it’s the perfect plant to pop near a seating area, doorway, or along a path where you’ll brush past the foliage and release its fragrance.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or early autumn, while the soil is warming and workable. Container-grown lavender can be planted at most times of year, but avoid planting into frozen or waterlogged soil.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny, sheltered position with free-draining soil. Lavender loves poorer, gritty soils and dislikes winter wet. Perfect for pots and containers, path edging, low hedging, gravel gardens, or sunny borders. Great for wildlife-friendly planting and pollinators.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant at the same depth as in the pot, with the crown just above soil level.
  • Spacing: Space 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart, depending on the look you want (closer for edging/hedging).
  • Soil Prep: Improve drainage by mixing in horticultural grit or sharp sand if your soil is heavy. Avoid rich manure—lavender prefers leaner conditions.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Once established, lavender is drought tolerant and needs only occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. In pots, water when the compost is dry, but never leave the plant sitting in water.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent flowers to keep the plant tidy and encourage further blooming.
  • Prune annually after flowering (or in early spring) to maintain a neat shape—trim back by around a third, but avoid cutting into old, woody stems.
  • In heavy soils, plant on a slight mound or in a raised bed to reduce the risk of winter wet.

Top Tip:
For the strongest scent and best flowering, give Lavender ‘Toscane’ full sun and excellent drainage. Plant near a path, patio, or doorway so you can enjoy the fragrance every time you pass—and you’ll be helping bees at the same time!
