Salvia greggii ‘Purple’ is a long-flowering, sun-loving salvia that brings masses of rich purple blooms from summer right through into autumn. The flowers sit above neat, bushy growth with lightly aromatic foliage, making it a brilliant choice for pollinator-friendly planting, warm borders, gravel gardens and patio pots.

It’s one of those plants that just keeps going—snip off faded stems and it quickly sends up fresh flower spikes, keeping the colour coming for weeks on end. In the Avon Bulbs & Plants style of garden, it’s a perfect “work hard, look good” perennial/shrubby salvia for adding reliable summer colour.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or early autumn, while the soil is workable (avoid planting into frozen or waterlogged ground).

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil. Salvia greggii dislikes winter wet, so drainage is key. Ideal for mixed borders, gravel gardens, raised beds, and pots and containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the top of the compost is level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space plants 35–45 cm (14–18 inches) apart to allow them to bush out.
  • Soil Prep: If your soil is heavy, mix in horticultural grit to improve drainage. Avoid over-fertile soil which can lead to softer growth.

Watering:
Water well after planting and keep watering while the plant establishes. Once established, Salvia greggii is fairly drought tolerant, but it will flower best with occasional watering during prolonged dry spells (especially in pots).

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead or lightly trim after each flush of flowers to encourage more blooms.
  • In spring, cut back to healthy growth to keep plants compact and floriferous.
  • In colder or very exposed gardens, provide winter protection (a dry mulch around the base, or move pots to a sheltered spot).

Top Tip:
For the longest display, give Salvia greggii ‘Purple’ a sunny spot and a quick trim after flowering bursts. It pairs beautifully with lavenders, ornamental grasses, Achillea and Verbena.
