Crocosmia ‘Firestars Firestarter’ is a bold, high-impact variety that really earns its name, producing sprays of vibrant flowers in fiery orange-red tones that light up the late-summer border. The blooms are carried on arching stems above neat, sword-like foliage, adding movement, colour and a wonderfully summery feel to borders and wildlife-friendly planting. It’s the kind of plant that instantly makes a border look more exciting—especially when planted in generous groups.

It’s also a favourite with bees and butterflies, and the strong stems make great cut flowers for bright, warm-toned arrangements. Once established, Crocosmia forms clumps that return year after year and gradually bulk up into an even better display.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Crocosmia corms in spring once the soil starts to warm. Avoid planting into frozen or waterlogged ground.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. Crocosmia is ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens and wildlife-friendly planting. In cooler or exposed areas, a warm, sheltered spot helps it perform at its best.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant corms about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space corms 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart. Plant in groups for the best display.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with a little compost. In heavy soil, add grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting and keep lightly moist while shoots appear. Once growing, Crocosmia is fairly tolerant, but will flower best with water during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent blooms to keep plants tidy.
  • Leave foliage in place after flowering until it yellows naturally—this feeds the corms for next year.
  • In autumn, mulch clumps in colder areas for winter protection.
  • Divide congested clumps every 3–4 years in spring to maintain vigour.

Top Tip:
For maximum impact, plant Crocosmia ‘Firestars Firestarter’ in bold drifts and weave in ornamental grasses for movement. It’s also stunning with purple Salvias or Echinacea for a vibrant late-summer mix.
