If you’re after a real “wow” plant for summer, Gladiolus ‘Impressive’ more than lives up to its name. This striking gladioli produces tall, elegant flower spikes packed with showy blooms that bring instant height and drama to borders and cutting gardens. The flowers open progressively up the stem, giving a long-lasting display and making it a brilliant choice if you want colour that keeps coming. It’s also a fantastic cut flower—gladioli can last well in a vase, and the strong stems make them a florist favourite.

Gladiolus are summer-flowering corms (not true bulbs) and are loved for their bold colour, architectural shape, and reliability. Plant them in sunny spots and you’ll be rewarded with weeks of blooms, plus they’re excellent for attracting pollinators when in flower. For an even longer season, plant corms in batches every couple of weeks through spring—your garden (and your vases) will thank you!

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Gladiolus corms in spring once the risk of hard frost has passed—typically April to June. For a longer flowering season, plant in batches every 2–3 weeks.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil. Gladioli thrive in warm spots and are ideal for mixed borders, cutting gardens, and patio containers. Avoid waterlogged ground as corms can rot.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant corms 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep with the pointed side facing up.
  • Spacing: Space 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart. Plant in groups for the best impact.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soil with grit or compost to aid drainage. A light feed is fine, but avoid overly rich soil that can encourage soft growth.

Watering:
Water after planting and keep the soil lightly moist as growth starts. Once established, water during dry spells—especially when buds are forming for the best flower spikes.

Aftercare Tips:

  • As stems grow, add support if needed—taller varieties can benefit from a cane in windy sites.
  • Deadhead spent blooms to keep plants looking tidy (leave the foliage to feed the corm).
  • After flowering, allow the leaves to die back naturally so the corm stores energy for next year.
  • In colder areas or heavy soils, lift corms after the foliage yello
