Gladiolus ‘Mon Amour’ is pure romance for the summer garden—tall, elegant spires packed with beautifully ruffled blooms in soft, dreamy tones (often blush-pink to creamy white, depending on light and growing conditions). Flowering through mid to late summer, it’s a brilliant way to add instant height, colour and that “wow” factor to borders and cutting gardens.

These are classic summer-flowering corms that are loved by pollinators, and they’re also one of the best value cut flowers you can grow—each corm can produce multiple flower spikes, and the blooms last superbly in a vase. Gladioli are also fantastic for succession planting: plant a few every couple of weeks and you’ll stretch the flowering season right into early autumn.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring once the risk of hard frost has passed (typically March to May). For a longer season of flowers, plant in small batches every 2–3 weeks until early summer.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained soil. Gladioli love warmth and light, and perform best in borders, cutting beds, and containers. Avoid exposed windy spots—taller stems may need support.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant corms 10–15 cm deep (about 4–6 inches), with the pointed side facing up.
  • Spacing: Space 10–15 cm apart (4–6 inches). Plant closer in groups for a stronger display and easier staking.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or organic matter to aid drainage. A light feed or compost is helpful, but avoid waterlogged ground.

Watering:
Water after planting, then keep the soil lightly moist while shoots appear. Once growing strongly, water during dry spells to help build larger flower spikes.

Aftercare Tips:

  • As stems grow, provide support with canes or plant through support rings to prevent wind damage.
  • Deadhead faded blooms to keep plants tidy, but leave foliage to feed the corm.
  • For cutting, harvest when the lowest flower bud just starts to open for the longest vase life.
  • After flowering, leave foliage until it yellows—this helps the corm store energy for next year.

Top Tip:
Gladiolus ‘Mon Amour’ is ideal for cutting gardens. Plant in batches for a steady supply of flowers and mix with airy fillers like Gypsophila or Ammi for gorgeous bouquets. In colder areas, lift and store corms over winter once the foliage dies back.
