Bring a touch of the tropics to your garden with Hedychium coccineum, a spectacular hardy ginger lily that produces bold, exotic-looking spikes of vivid orange-red flowers in late summer and autumn. The blooms are held above lush, banana-like foliage, creating instant drama in borders and patio pots. As well as being a real showstopper, Hedychium is also known for attracting pollinators and adding that “holiday garden” feel just when many other plants are starting to fade.

This is a brilliant choice for gardeners who love architectural plants—it gives height, texture and movement, and its foliage can be just as impactful as the flowers. In a warm, sheltered spot it can return year after year, slowly forming impressive clumps. Perfect for pairing with cannas, dahlias, bananas (Musa), and grasses for a truly lush, jungle-style display.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring once the risk of hard frost has passed, or in early autumn in milder areas, while the soil is still warm and workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade in a sheltered spot. Hedychium coccineum loves moisture-retentive, fertile, well-drained soil and performs best in a warm microclimate (such as near a wall or fence). Ideal for tropical-style borders, exotic planting schemes, and large containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant the rhizome/crown about 5–8 cm below the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart to allow room to clump up.
  • Soil Prep: Mix in plenty of well-rotted compost or organic matter to improve fertility and help retain moisture.

Watering:
Water well after planting and keep the soil consistently moist during the growing season. In containers, water more regularly in warm weather. Reduce watering as growth dies back in autumn.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser in late spring and mid-summer for stronger growth and better flowering.
  • Mulch well in autumn with straw, leaf mould or compost to protect the crown over winter.
