Hemerocallis ‘Blueberry Vanilla’ is a truly irresistible daylily, combining rich, creamy vanilla petals brushed with a velvety blueberry-purple tones and a glowing throat that draws the eye from across the border. Each bloom is beautifully shaped and held above clumps of fresh green, arching, strap-like foliage, creating a tidy mound that looks good from spring right through to autumn.

Daylilies are famous for being tough, reliable and wonderfully low-maintenance—perfect if you want maximum colour without the fuss. Although each flower lasts just a day (hence the name), ‘Blueberry Vanilla’ produces buds in succession over weeks, so the overall display keeps coming. It’s also a brilliant choice for busy gardens, new borders, and containers, and once established it copes well with summer heat and short dry spells. As a bonus, Hemerocallis are excellent value plants—they bulk up into generous clumps over time and can be divided to create even more plants.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun for the best flowering (light shade is tolerated). Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Hemerocallis are ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, pollinator-friendly planting, and they’re also excellent in containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the crown sits just at or slightly below the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart to allow plants to form generous clumps.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the soil with well-rotted compost or organic matter to help retain moisture and support flowering.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep the soil consistently moist while the plant establishes. Once settled, Hemerocallis are fairly drought tolerant, but they will flower best with occasional watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove spent flowers to keep plants looking tidy and encourage continued budding.
  • Cut back tired foliage in autumn or simply tidy in spring as new growth appears.
  • Divide clumps every 3–5 years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour and produce more plants.

Top Tip:
For the best colour and repeat performance, give ‘Blueberry Vanilla’ plenty of sun and a mulch of compost in spring. It pairs beautifully with ornamental grasses, Salvias, Nepeta and Echinacea for a long season of interest.
