Hosta ‘Sting’ is a real little gem for shady spots, bringing crisp colour and texture to the garden from spring right through to autumn. Its attractive, narrow, pointed leaves form a neat, compact clump, typically showing fresh green centres with lighter, creamy-yellow to white edging that brightens darker corners beautifully. It’s an excellent choice for edging shady borders, underplanting shrubs, or adding structure to pots and patio containers.
Hostas are prized for their long-lasting foliage impact, and ‘Sting’ is no exception—hardy, reliable and wonderfully low maintenance once established. In summer it can also produce elegant stems of pale lavender flowers, which are loved by pollinators. As a bonus, Hostas are great for creating contrast: mix them with ferns, Heuchera and Astilbe for a lush, woodland look that’s easy to achieve and a joy to maintain.
When to Plant:
Plant bare roots in autumn through to early spring while dormant, avoiding periods when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.
Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or full shade with moisture-retentive, well-drained soil. Hostas thrive in humus-rich soil and are ideal for woodland borders, shady mixed beds, underplanting shrubs, or growing in containers.
How to Plant:
Watering:
Water well after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Hostas dislike drying out—mulching helps keep roots cool and moist.
