Iris ‘Blue Magic’ brings a real splash of drama to late spring and early summer borders, with bold, velvety blue blooms that practically glow in the sunshine. Like all bearded irises, the flowers are beautifully structured—upright “standards” above and elegant, ruffled “falls” below—often with a contrasting beard that acts as a landing strip for pollinators.

This is a brilliant plant for gardeners who want maximum impact with minimal fuss. Bearded irises are famously long-lived and actually prefer lean, well-drained soil, making them ideal for hot, sunny spots where other plants can struggle. Once established, they’re drought tolerant, great for gravel gardens, and excellent for cutting—bring a few stems indoors and you’ll get that unmistakable, light iris fragrance too.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant iris rhizomes in late summer to autumn (ideal) or in spring when the soil is workable, avoiding frozen or waterlogged conditions.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with very well-drained soil. Bearded irises love warmth and actually thrive in poorer, lean soils. Perfect for mixed borders, gravel gardens, sun-baked spots and the front of borders where they can bask in the light.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the rhizome sits at the soil surface (or just barely covered in lighter soils). The top of the rhizome should be able to catch the sun.
  • Spacing: Space 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart to allow good airflow and room to form clumps.
  • Soil Prep: Improve drainage if needed by adding grit or planting on a slight mound. Avoid rich manures as they can encourage leaf growth over flowers.

Watering:
Water in after planting, then water sparingly. Once established, bearded irises are drought tolerant and dislike constantly wet soil.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flower stems after blooming to keep plants tidy.
  • Trim tatty leaves in autumn and keep the rhizome area clear to reduce rot.
  • Divide clumps every 3–5 years (or when flowering slows) to maintain vigour.

Top Tip:
For best flowering, make sure Iris ‘Blue Magic’ gets at least 6 hours of sun a day and that the rhizomes aren’t shaded by nearby plants. A sunny, well-drained spot is the secret to masses of blooms.
