If you love rich, warm colour in the garden, Iris ‘Bronze Perfection’ is a real show-stopper. This striking bearded iris produces large, beautifully ruffled blooms in glowing bronze, copper and golden-apricot tones, often with a soft sheen that catches the sunlight. Each flower sits proudly on strong, upright stems above bold, sword-like foliage, bringing structure and drama to borders in late spring and early summer.

Bearded irises are wonderfully rewarding plants: they’re hardy, long-lived, and once settled they can flower reliably for years with very little fuss. They’re also fantastic for pollinators, and the flowers make a superb cut bloom for a vase. Planted in groups, ‘Bronze Perfection’ creates a luxurious, almost “sunset” effect—especially gorgeous alongside purples, blues and silvery foliage plants.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant bare root iris rhizomes in late summer to early autumn for best establishment and flowering, although planting in spring is also possible. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Bearded irises need plenty of sun to flower well and dislike winter wet. Ideal for mixed borders, gravel gardens, banks, or the front of a sunny border where the rhizomes can warm up.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant the rhizome so it sits at the soil surface or is only just covered. In heavier soils, leave the top of the rhizome slightly exposed.
  • Spacing: Space 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart to allow air circulation and room to form clumps.
  • Soil Prep: Improve drainage if needed by adding grit or planting on a slight mound. Avoid rich manure directly under the rhizome.

Watering:
Water in after planting, then water sparingly. Once established, bearded irises are drought tolerant and usually only need watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove spent blooms to keep plants tidy.
  • In late summer, cut old foliage back to reduce overwintering pests and keep clumps neat.
  • Divide crowded clumps every 3–5 years to maintain vigour and encourage better flowering.

Top Tip:
For the best flowers, ensure the rhizomes get plenty of sun and airflow. If your iris produces lots of leaves but few blooms, it’s often a sign it needs dividing or a sunnier spot.
