Paeonia ‘Monsieur Jules Elie’ is a truly luxurious, old favourite peony with huge, fully double blooms in soft shell-pink, often with a gentle silvery sheen and a delicious fragrance. Flowering in late spring to early summer, it makes a sensational statement in borders and cutting gardens, and the glossy green foliage looks smart for months after flowering. Once planted, peonies can live happily for decades, getting better each year—so it’s well worth giving them the right start.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant peony roots/crowns in autumn for the best establishment, although spring planting is also possible. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position (or light shade) with fertile, well-drained soil. Peonies dislike winter wet, so avoid heavy, soggy areas. Ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens and cutting gardens.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the “eyes” (buds) sit only 2–3 cm below the soil surface. Planting too deep can reduce flowering.
  • Spacing: Space plants 80–100 cm (32–40 inches) apart to allow room to mature.
  • Soil Prep: Dig in well-rotted compost and ensure good drainage. Avoid fresh manure.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep lightly watered during dry spells in the first season. Once established, peonies are fairly drought tolerant but perform best with occasional deep watering in prolonged dry periods.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Apply a spring mulch of compost to feed the plant (keep mulch away from the crown).
  • Use discreet support rings if needed as buds swell to prevent heavy blooms flopping in rain.
  • Deadhead after flowering, but leave foliage to feed the root for next year.
  • Cut herbaceous peonies back to ground level in autumn once foliage dies back.
  • Peonies dislike being moved—plant once and leave to settle for best results.

Top Tip:
For reliable flowering, don’t plant too deep—keep the buds only 2–3 cm below the surface. ‘Monsieur Jules Elie’ has very large blooms, so a simple support ring helps keep the flowers upright and pristine.
