Paeonia ‘Sarah Bernhardt’ is one of the best-loved peonies of all time, producing huge, fully double, soft blush-pink blooms with a gentle fragrance that feels instantly luxurious. The flowers are wonderfully ruffled and romantic, held on strong stems above lush green foliage that looks smart all season. A true garden classic for mixed borders and cutting gardens, it’s also a brilliant long-term investment—peonies can live for decades, getting better year after year once established.

A few lovely facts:

  • ‘Sarah Bernhardt’ was named after the famous French actress and has been cherished in gardens for well over a century.
  • Peonies are famously long-lived—once settled, they often flower reliably for many years with very little fuss.
  • They’re excellent for cutting: a few stems make a statement, and the buds open beautifully in a vase.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant bare root peonies in autumn through to early spring while dormant, avoiding periods when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun (or light shade) with fertile, well-drained soil. Peonies prefer a spot where they can be left undisturbed for years—ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens and cutting gardens.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the buds (eyes) sit just 2–3 cm below the soil surface. Planting too deep can reduce flowering.
  • Spacing: Space plants 80–100 cm (32–40 inches) apart to allow room for mature growth.
  • Soil Prep: Enrich the planting hole with well-rotted compost. In heavy soils, add a little grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep the soil lightly moist while establishing, then water during prolonged dry spells. Avoid waterlogging, especially in winter.

Aftercare Tips:

  • In spring, apply a mulch of compost or well-rotted manure, keeping it away from the crown.
  • Support flower stems if needed, especially in exposed spots or after heavy rain.
  • Remove spent blooms and allow foliage to remain until autumn to feed the roots for next year.
  • Cut back foliage in late autumn once it dies back naturally.

Top Tip:
Peonies dislike being moved—choose the right spot first time and they will reward you for years. For the best vase life, cut stems when buds feel like a soft marshmallow and are just starting to show colour.
