Paeonia ‘Red Sarah Bernhardt’ is a show-stopping peony with large, fully double blooms in rich, romantic deep rose-red tones, packed with layers of ruffled petals that create that classic “old fashioned” peony look. When in flower it’s an absolute statement plant—luxurious, generous and wonderfully long-lived. Perfect for borders and cutting gardens, it also makes a fabulous feature in a mixed perennial bed where it will return bigger and better each year once established.

Peonies are famous for their longevity (many thrive for decades in the same spot), and ‘Red Sarah Bernhardt’ is no exception. They’re also prized as a cut flower, with strong stems and big, glamorous heads that look incredible in a vase. With the right planting depth and a sunny position, you can enjoy a dependable late spring to early summer display for years to come.

Did you know?

  • Peonies can live and flower for 50 years or more when left undisturbed in the right spot.
  • Planting depth matters: too deep can reduce flowering—shallow planting encourages blooms.
  • Ants on peony buds are normal—they’re attracted to the sugary coating and don’t harm the plant.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant peonies in autumn (ideal) or in spring while the soil is moist and workable. Autumn planting gives the best chance for strong root establishment.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun (or very light shade) with fertile, well-drained soil. Peonies dislike waterlogging and prefer to be left undisturbed once planted. Ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, and cutting gardens.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the buds (eyes) sit just 2–5 cm below the soil surface (shallower in heavier soils).
  • Spacing: Space plants 80–100 cm (32–40 inches) apart to allow room for mature growth and good airflow.
  • Soil Prep: Dig a generous hole and mix in well-rotted compost. Avoid adding too much nitrogen-rich fertiliser, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Watering:
Water well after planting and keep evenly moist while establishing. Once settled, peonies are fairly low-maintenance, but benefit from watering during prolonged dry spells in spring and early summer.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Support stems with a ring or plant support if flowers are heavy, especially in exposed spots.
  • Deadhead spent blooms to keep the plant tidy, but leave foliage in place to feed the roots.
  • In autumn, cut herbaceous peonies back to ground level once foliage has died back.
  • Avoid moving peonies once established—they prefer to stay put and may take time to re-settle if disturbed.

Top Tip:
For the best flower show, ensure the “eyes” are not planted too deep. Planting peonies shallowly and giving them plenty of sun is the secret to reliable blooms year after year.
