Erica × darleyensis ‘White’ (often called winter heath / winter heather) is a brilliant little plant for brightening the garden at the coldest time of year. It forms a neat, evergreen mound of fine, needle-like foliage and then covers itself in masses of small, white bell-shaped flowers, providing much-needed nectar for early pollinators.
For Valentine’s Day, it’s a lovely alternative to cut flowers—fresh, cheerful, and long-lasting, looking fabulous in a decorative pot by the door, on the patio, or planted into the garden for winter colour year after year. Many Erica × darleyensis types are also noted for being lime tolerant, so they’ll grow in a wide range of garden soils as long as drainage is good.
When to Plant:
Plant in spring or autumn while the soil is workable. Container-grown heathers can be planted most of the year, avoiding periods of frost or waterlogging.
Where to Plant:
Choose a spot in full sun or light/partial shade with well-drained soil. Erica × darleyensis is ideal for front borders, rock/gravel gardens, ground cover, and pots and containers. Good drainage is the key to happy heathers.
How to Plant:
Watering:
Water well after planting and keep the soil evenly moist while establishing. Once settled, water during prolonged dry spells (container plants will need more regular watering).
