Fresh, bright and wonderfully textural, Heuchera 'Apple Crisp' is a compact evergreen to semi-evergreen perennial grown for its beautiful apple-green foliage washed with a delicate silvery sheen. Each leaf is deeply cut and attractively ruffled around the edges, giving the plant a crisp, almost frilled appearance that makes it stand out beautifully in both borders and containers.

The luminous foliage is the real star of the show, bringing a splash of fresh colour to partially shaded areas where darker-leaved plants can sometimes disappear. The leaves retain their attractive colouring for much of the year, with only subtle changes in tone during colder weather.

From late spring into summer, slender stems rise above the foliage carrying sprays of delicate creamy-white flowers. These airy blooms provide a lovely contrast to the bold leaves and add an extra layer of interest without overwhelming the plant's neat, compact habit.

Particularly useful for the front of borders, woodland-style planting, edging paths and patio containers, 'Apple Crisp' combines beautifully with Hostas, Ferns, Brunnera and darker Heucheras. It also looks superb planted in a decorative pot where its beautifully ruffled foliage can be appreciated throughout the seasons.

Supplied as a well-established 2 litre potted plant, ready for planting into the garden or a container.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Heuchera 'Apple Crisp' can be planted from spring through to autumn, provided the ground is not frozen, waterlogged or excessively dry. As a 2 litre potted plant, it already has an established root system and can begin settling into its new position soon after planting.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or light shade. A position with morning sun and some protection from the strongest afternoon sunshine is ideal for maintaining the fresh apple-green foliage. Plant in fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Heucheras are excellent at the front of borders, beneath lightly canopied shrubs and trees, along pathways and in patio containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Dig a hole approximately twice the width of the pot and plant so that the top of the rootball and crown sit level with the surrounding soil. Do not bury the crown deeply.
  • Spacing: Allow approximately 30–40cm (12–16 inches) between plants.
  • Soil Prep: Mix garden compost or well-rotted organic matter into the planting area. On heavy soils, add horticultural grit to improve drainage.
  • Containers: Plant into a good-quality, free-draining multipurpose compost and choose a container with adequate drainage holes.

Watering:
Water thoroughly immediately after planting and continue watering regularly while the plant establishes. Keep the soil reasonably moist during prolonged dry periods, particularly when growing in containers, but avoid leaving the roots sitting in waterlogged soil.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove old or damaged leaves in early spring to reveal fresh new growth.
  • Remove faded flower stems once flowering has finished to keep the plant looking tidy.
  • Apply a light mulch of compost around the plant in spring, keeping the material away from the crown.
  • Established plants can be lifted and divided every few years if the clump becomes congested or woody.
  • Check established plants occasionally, as Heucheras can gradually develop a raised crown and may benefit from lifting and replanting at the correct depth.

Top Tip:
Use 'Apple Crisp' to brighten a partially shaded corner. Its fresh apple-green and silver foliage looks particularly effective alongside deep burgundy or purple Heucheras, creating a striking foliage display even when neither plant is in flower.
