Bright, cheerful and impossible to miss, Crocus vernus 'Golden Yellow' produces large, glowing golden-yellow flowers that bring a welcome burst of sunshine to the garden at the very start of spring.

A member of the popular Dutch Crocus group, this vigorous variety is prized for its exceptionally large blooms and reliable performance. The rich yellow flowers emerge in abundance from late winter onwards, opening wide on sunny days to reveal vivid orange stamens that attract early bees and other pollinating insects.

Its bold colouring makes it one of the most effective crocuses for creating impact in the garden. Whether planted in lawns, borders, rock gardens or containers, 'Golden Yellow' provides a dazzling display that stands out beautifully against fresh spring foliage. It also combines wonderfully with purple and white crocuses for classic spring colour schemes.

Easy to grow and highly dependable, the corms gradually multiply over time, producing larger and more impressive displays with each passing year.

A superb variety for brightening the garden after winter and one of the best yellow crocuses available.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Crocus vernus corms in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. Dutch Crocuses are ideal for borders, rock gardens, containers and naturalising in lawns.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant corms approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space corms about 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to ensure good drainage.

Watering:
Water after planting to settle the soil. Once established, Crocus corms require very little additional watering except during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • If planted in lawns, avoid mowing until the leaves have yellowed completely.
  • Leave clumps undisturbed to encourage natural multiplication.

Top Tip:
Plant with purple varieties such as 'Flower Record' or white varieties such as 'Jeanne d'Arc' for a vibrant and eye-catching spring display.
