A true classic among garden hyacinths, Hyacinthus 'Delft Blue' has delighted gardeners for generations with its large, beautifully scented flower spikes in soft porcelain-blue, reminiscent of the famous Dutch Delft pottery from which it takes its name.

Introduced in 1944, this award-winning variety remains one of the most popular hyacinths ever grown. Each sturdy flower spike is densely packed with dozens of star-shaped florets in delicate shades of lavender-blue with subtle silver tones, creating a refined and elegant display that blends effortlessly with almost any spring planting.

The flowers release the rich, sweet perfume that has made hyacinths famous for centuries, making 'Delft Blue' perfect for planting beside paths, doorways and patios where its fragrance can be fully appreciated. It is equally at home in borders, containers and decorative pots, while its strong stems and long-lasting blooms make it one of the finest cut flowers for spring arrangements.

Beautiful planted alone or combined with white, pink and deep blue hyacinths, 'Delft Blue' is a timeless favourite and recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, bringing elegance, colour and unforgettable fragrance to every spring garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Hyacinth bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Hyacinths are ideal for borders, containers, patio pots and can also be grown indoors for winter flowering.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter. In heavy soils, add grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. During active growth, keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flower spikes once flowering has finished.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally, as this feeds the bulb for the following year's flowers.
  • Apply a balanced fertiliser after flowering to encourage strong bulbs.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Delft Blue' with white hyacinths such as 'Carnegie' and soft pink varieties like 'Pink Surprise' for a classic Dutch-inspired spring display full of colour and fragrance.
