True to its cheerful name, Muscari 'Big Smile' produces generous spikes of vibrant sky-blue flowers that bring a bright, uplifting splash of colour to the spring garden. With its larger flower heads, sturdy stems and long-lasting blooms, this modern grape hyacinth is an outstanding choice for borders, containers and naturalised planting.

Unlike many traditional Muscari, 'Big Smile' is prized for its fuller, broader flower spikes, densely packed with rich azure-blue, urn-shaped florets. As the flowers mature, they develop subtle lighter blue highlights towards the top of each spike, adding depth and freshness to the display. The blooms are lightly fragrant and provide an excellent early source of nectar for bees and other pollinating insects.

Compact yet vigorous, 'Big Smile' performs beautifully in drifts beneath deciduous trees, along pathways, in rockeries or spilling from patio containers. Left undisturbed, the bulbs multiply steadily, creating ever-larger carpets of brilliant spring colour with very little maintenance.

Its rich blue flowers combine effortlessly with white Narcissus, pastel tulips, Anemones and early-flowering species bulbs, making it an invaluable companion throughout the spring garden.

A dependable and rewarding grape hyacinth that lives up to its name by delivering a joyful display year after year.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Muscari bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, while the soil is still warm enough for roots to establish before winter.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Muscari are ideal for borders, rockeries, containers, woodland edges, beneath deciduous trees and naturalising in lawns.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 8–10 cm (3–4 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or organic matter to ensure good drainage before planting.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, Muscari require very little watering except during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering so the bulbs can store energy for next spring.
  • Leave bulbs undisturbed to naturalise and multiply into impressive clumps.
  • Divide overcrowded clumps every few years if flowering begins to decline.

Top Tip:
Plant in generous groups with white or yellow daffodils and pastel tulips for a vibrant spring display that returns bigger and better each year.
