Bold, richly coloured and wonderfully fragrant, Paeonia 'Big Ben' is a magnificent herbaceous peony that commands attention in the late spring garden. Its enormous, fully double blooms are a sumptuous deep crimson-red, packed with velvety petals that create a luxurious, rose-like appearance.

Introduced in 1943 by Auten, this classic American variety has remained a favourite for generations thanks to its exceptional flower size, rich perfume and reliable garden performance. The dramatic blooms are carried on sturdy stems above handsome dark green foliage, making 'Big Ben' an outstanding choice for borders and one of the finest varieties for cutting.

Flowering from late spring into early summer, the fragrant flowers are highly attractive to bees when first opening and make spectacular additions to floral arrangements. As with all herbaceous peonies, the plant becomes more impressive with age, rewarding patience with increasingly abundant displays year after year.

Long-lived, hardy and remarkably easy to grow, Paeonia 'Big Ben' is a timeless garden favourite that can thrive for decades, becoming a treasured feature of the garden for generations.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Paeonia 'Big Ben' from autumn through to spring, avoiding periods when the ground is frozen or waterlogged. Autumn planting allows the roots to establish well before the following growing season.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or light partial shade with fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Peonies dislike being disturbed, so plant where they can remain for many years.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant with the crown buds no more than 2–3 cm (1 inch) below the soil surface. Planting too deeply may prevent flowering.
  • Spacing: Allow approximately 75–90 cm (30–36 inches) between plants.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the planting area with garden compost or well-rotted manure before planting.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Established plants generally only require watering during prolonged dry periods.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Feed each spring with a balanced fertiliser.
  • Deadhead spent blooms to keep plants looking tidy.
  • Cut stems back to ground level once the foliage has naturally died back in autumn.
  • Avoid lifting or moving established plants unless absolutely necessary.

Top Tip:
Although the stems are strong, the enormous double flowers may benefit from discreet support during wet weather. Plant alongside white irises or Nepeta to create a striking contrast with its deep crimson blooms.
