A true confection of a flower, Paeonia 'Raspberry Sundae' is one of the most elegant herbaceous peonies, producing enormous, fully double, bomb-shaped blooms in a delicious blend of soft pink, creamy white and raspberry tones. The flowers open with broad, pale blush-pink outer petals surrounding a densely packed, creamy-white centre, beautifully tipped with ruffled raspberry-pink petaloids. As each bloom matures, the colours soften to delicate blush-white, creating an ever-changing display of subtle pastel shades.

Introduced by the renowned American breeder Klehm in 1968, 'Raspberry Sundae' has become one of the world's most admired peonies, celebrated for its exceptional flower size, sweet fragrance and outstanding garden performance. The impressive blooms are carried on sturdy stems above handsome, deep green foliage, making this variety equally spectacular in the border and as a premium cut flower.

Flowering from late spring into early summer, the luxurious blooms provide weeks of colour and elegance. Their sophisticated blend of soft pastel tones combines beautifully with blues, purples and whites, making 'Raspberry Sundae' a standout feature in cottage gardens, mixed borders and cutting gardens.

Exceptionally hardy and incredibly long-lived, this beautiful peony becomes increasingly floriferous with age. Left undisturbed in a sunny position, it will reward gardeners with breathtaking displays for decades.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Paeonia 'Raspberry Sundae' from autumn through to spring, avoiding periods when the ground is frozen or waterlogged. Autumn planting gives the roots the best opportunity to establish before flowering.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position with fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. Peonies dislike being disturbed once established, so choose a permanent position where they can flourish for many years.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant with the crown buds no deeper than 2–3cm (1 inch) below the soil surface. Planting too deeply may prevent flowering.
  • Spacing: Allow 75–90cm (30–36 inches) between plants.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the planting area with garden compost or well-rotted manure before planting to encourage healthy root development.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Once established, plants are relatively drought tolerant but benefit from watering during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Feed annually in spring with a balanced fertiliser.
  • Remove faded flowers after blooming to encourage healthy growth.
  • Cut stems back to ground level once the foliage has naturally died back in autumn.
  • Avoid moving established plants, as flowering improves significantly with age.

Top Tip:
'Raspberry Sundae' looks magnificent planted alongside white Delphiniums, lavender, Nepeta or dark purple Alliums, where its creamy pink blooms create a luxurious early summer display. The flowers are also outstanding for cutting and long-lasting arrangements.
