Elegant, unusual and unmistakably eye-catching, Tulipa 'Virichic' is a remarkable Viridiflora Tulip that combines the graceful form of a Lily-flowered tulip with the distinctive green markings that define the Viridiflora group. Its long, slender petals curve elegantly outwards into pointed tips, creating an airy, sculptural bloom that adds movement and sophistication to the late spring garden.

Each flower opens in rich shades of rose-pink to raspberry, beautifully accented by bold emerald-green flames running through the centre of every petal. As the blooms mature, the pink tones soften while the green markings remain vivid, ensuring a display that is both striking and long-lasting.

Flowering throughout May, 'Virichic' reaches 45–55cm in height and is carried on strong, upright stems, making it an excellent choice for borders, patio containers and cutting gardens. Its unusual colour combination pairs beautifully with deep purple tulips such as 'Queen of Night', creamy white varieties like 'Spring Green', and ornamental Alliums for an elegant late spring display.

A recipient of the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit (AGM), Tulipa 'Virichic' is renowned for its excellent garden performance and exceptionally long-lasting blooms, both outdoors and in the vase.

Combining architectural elegance with vibrant colour, 'Virichic' is one of the most distinctive tulips you can grow.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Tulip bulbs in autumn, ideally from October to December, once the soil has cooled. Planting later in autumn helps reduce the risk of tulip diseases and encourages healthy spring flowering.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. 'Virichic' is ideal for borders, patio containers, cutting gardens and contemporary planting schemes.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with compost and, if necessary, add horticultural grit to improve drainage.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, tulips generally only require watering during prolonged dry spells in spring.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove faded flowers once blooming has finished.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally for at least six weeks after flowering so the bulbs can replenish their energy for the following year.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage strong stems and abundant blooms.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Virichic' with dark tulips such as 'Queen of Night', white Viridiflora varieties like 'Spring Green' or ornamental Alliums to highlight its elegant green flames and lily-like flowers. Its unusual blooms are also exceptional for long-lasting floral arrangements.
