Hemerocallis ‘Frans Hals’ is a classic daylily that brings a real burst of sunshine to the summer garden. Each flower is a striking two-tone blend of golden yellow petals with rich coppery-orange outer segments, creating a bold, warm colour contrast that’s easy to spot from across the border. Daylilies are famously tough, long-lived and incredibly rewarding—each bloom lasts just one day (hence the name), but the plant produces lots of buds over weeks, so the display keeps coming.

It’s also a brilliant choice if you want maximum impact with minimal fuss: Hemerocallis copes with heat, mixed soils and short dry spells once established, and it’s a great plant for pollinator-friendly planting. Pop it into borders, cottage gardens, prairie-style schemes, or even larger containers for a cheerful summer show.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant bare roots in spring or autumn, while the soil is moist and workable. Avoid planting when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun for the best flowering, though light shade is tolerated. Hemerocallis thrives in most garden soils that are well-drained but not too dry. Ideal for mixed borders, cottage gardens, wildlife-friendly planting, or patio containers.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant so the crown sits just below the soil surface, with the roots spread out and the growing point covered by about 2–3 cm of soil.
  • Spacing: Space 45–60 cm (18–24 inches) apart to allow room for clumps to expand.
  • Soil Prep: Improve the soil with well-rotted compost to help retain moisture and encourage strong growth.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Once established, daylilies are fairly drought tolerant, but they flower best with occasional deep watering in dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Remove spent flowers to keep plants tidy and encourage more blooms.
  • Cut back fading foliage in autumn, or leave until early spring to protect the crown over winter.
  • Divide clumps every 3–5 years in spring or autumn to maintain vigour and increase plants.

Top Tip:
For the longest flowering display, plant Hemerocallis where it gets plenty of sun and add a mulch in spring to keep moisture in. They look superb planted in generous drifts and pair beautifully with grasses, Salvias and Echinacea.
