Sparaxis tricolor (often called the Harlequin Flower) is a small bulb (corm) that punches well above its weight, producing vivid, star-shaped blooms with bold, contrasting centres that open wide in sunshine. Perfect for adding jewel-like colour to the front of borders, gravel gardens, and pots on the patio, Sparaxis looks best planted in generous little groups so the “confetti” effect really shows. It’s also lovely as a cut flower—small stems, big impact.

Native to South Africa, it enjoys warmth, sun and excellent drainage. In the UK it’s commonly grown as a summer-flowering corm—ideal if you want something a bit different and brilliantly cheerful.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

In the UK, plant Sparaxis corms in spring once the risk of hard frost has passed. You can start them under cover from March and plant out later, or plant direct outside in late spring when the soil has warmed.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny, sheltered position with very well-drained soil. Sparaxis loves warmth and is ideal for pots and containers, gravel gardens, and the front of a warm border.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant corms about 5–7.5 cm deep, with the pointed end upwards.
  • Spacing: Space corms 5–10 cm apart (closer in pots for a fuller display).
  • Soil Prep: If your soil is heavy, add horticultural grit/sand to improve drainage. In pots, use multipurpose compost with added grit.

Watering:
Water in after planting. Keep soil lightly moist while in growth, but avoid waterlogging. As flowers fade, reduce watering and allow the corms to dry off.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Deadhead spent blooms and allow foliage to die back naturally to feed the corms.
  • Because Sparaxis is from a warm climate, protect from winter wet. In colder or wetter areas, lift and store corms dry and frost-free, or grow in pots you can move under cover.

Top Tip:
For maximum impact, plant in groups and place them where you’ll see them up close—Sparaxis flowers open widest in sunshine and look amazing in a pot by a door or patio.
