Sparaxis tricolor (often called the Harlequin Flower) is a small bulb (corm) that punches well above its weight, producing vivid, star-shaped blooms with bold, contrasting centres that open wide in sunshine. Perfect for adding jewel-like colour to the front of borders, gravel gardens, and pots on the patio, Sparaxis looks best planted in generous little groups so the “confetti” effect really shows. It’s also lovely as a cut flower—small stems, big impact.
Native to South Africa, it enjoys warmth, sun and excellent drainage. In the UK it’s commonly grown as a summer-flowering corm—ideal if you want something a bit different and brilliantly cheerful.
When to Plant:
In the UK, plant Sparaxis corms in spring once the risk of hard frost has passed. You can start them under cover from March and plant out later, or plant direct outside in late spring when the soil has warmed.
Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny, sheltered position with very well-drained soil. Sparaxis loves warmth and is ideal for pots and containers, gravel gardens, and the front of a warm border.
How to Plant:
Watering:
Water in after planting. Keep soil lightly moist while in growth, but avoid waterlogging. As flowers fade, reduce watering and allow the corms to dry off.
