Elegant, richly coloured and wonderfully reliable, Iris hollandica 'Purple Sensation' produces magnificent deep violet-purple flowers with striking golden-yellow markings, bringing bold colour and graceful form to the late spring and early summer garden.

The beautifully shaped blooms feature rich royal purple standards rising above broad, velvety falls in intense violet shades, each accented by a brilliant golden-yellow signal that creates a dramatic focal point. Held on tall, slender stems above neat, sword-like foliage, the flowers add both height and sophistication to sunny borders while gently swaying in the breeze.

Dutch Irises have long been prized for their exceptional cut-flower qualities, and 'Purple Sensation' is one of the finest. Its sturdy stems, long-lasting blooms and rich colouring make it a favourite with florists, while in the garden it combines beautifully with white peonies, ornamental alliums, salvias and silver-leaved perennials.

Easy to grow and returning reliably year after year, Iris hollandica 'Purple Sensation' is perfect for borders, gravel gardens, cottage gardens and cutting patches, where its vibrant flowers provide weeks of colour.

A superb Dutch Iris that combines classic elegance with rich jewel-like colouring.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Dutch Iris bulbs in autumn, ideally between September and November, while the soil is still warm enough for roots to establish before winter.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny position with fertile, well-drained soil. Dutch Irises thrive in borders, gravel gardens and cutting gardens where they receive plenty of sunlight.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs approximately 10–12 cm (4–5 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs about 10 cm (4 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve heavy soils with grit or sharp sand to improve drainage. Incorporate compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil. Once established, Dutch Irises need very little additional watering except during prolonged dry spells.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally after flowering.
  • Feed with a balanced fertiliser after flowering to encourage strong bulbs for the following year.
  • Leave bulbs undisturbed where possible to establish larger clumps over time.

Top Tip:
Plant 'Purple Sensation' alongside white Dutch Irises, golden alliums or silver-foliaged plants to emphasise its rich violet colouring and create a striking early summer display.
