Elegant, unusual and highly sought after, Polygonatum odoratum 'Flore Pleno' is a magnificent double-flowered form of the Fragrant Solomon's Seal. A rare woodland treasure, it combines the graceful arching stems and refined foliage of the species with exquisitely layered, double blooms that bring a touch of sophistication to shaded gardens.

In spring, gently arching stems emerge clothed in rows of fresh blue-green leaves, creating a graceful architectural presence. Suspended beneath the stems are clusters of fully double, creamy-white, bell-shaped flowers, each beautifully layered with extra petals that give the blooms an almost porcelain-like appearance. Unlike the single-flowered species, these elegant double flowers provide exceptional texture and are lightly fragrant, making them a true collector's plant.

Flowering from May to June, 'Flore Pleno' thrives in cool, humus-rich woodland conditions where it gradually forms handsome clumps over time. Its refined habit makes it a superb companion for Hostas, Ferns, Epimediums, Trilliums and spring-flowering bulbs, adding structure and elegance to shady borders throughout the season.

Exceptionally hardy and long-lived, this rare perennial requires very little maintenance and becomes increasingly impressive as the clumps mature.

A beautiful double-flowered Solomon's Seal whose exquisite blooms and graceful habit make it one of the finest woodland plants available.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Polygonatum odoratum 'Flore Pleno' rhizomes in autumn or early spring, while the soil is cool and moist.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or full shade with fertile, humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. It is ideal for woodland gardens, shaded borders and beneath deciduous trees.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant rhizomes approximately 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) below the soil surface, ensuring the growing buds face upwards.
  • Spacing: Space plants 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart to allow clumps to develop naturally.
  • Soil Prep: Incorporate generous amounts of garden compost, leaf mould or well-rotted organic matter before planting to improve fertility and moisture retention.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Once established, water during prolonged dry spells, particularly in late spring and summer.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Apply an annual mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring.
  • Allow the foliage to die back naturally in autumn before removing old stems.
  • Leave established clumps undisturbed, where they will slowly expand and flower more profusely each year.

Top Tip:
Plant with Hostas, ferns, Pulmonarias and Epimediums to create a luxurious woodland display where the unusual double flowers can be appreciated up close.
