An exquisite and rarely offered woodland perennial, Polygonatum curvistylum is an elegant species of Solomon's Seal native to the mountain woodlands of Yunnan, China. Far more delicate than the familiar Solomon's Seal, it is prized by collectors for its graceful arching stems, unusually twisted foliage and beautifully coloured flowers.

In spring, slender purple-flushed stems emerge, arching gently to carry rows of narrow, lance-shaped leaves with distinctive twisting tips, giving the plant an airy, refined appearance. In early summer, clusters of small, pendulous bell-shaped flowers appear beneath the stems in beautiful shades of soft pink, rose-red and lilac, adding an unexpected splash of colour to the shaded garden. The flowers are often followed by attractive dark berries later in the season, extending the plant's ornamental interest.

Growing to around 30–70cm (12–28") tall, Polygonatum curvistylum thrives in cool, humus-rich woodland conditions, where it gradually develops into elegant clumps. It combines beautifully with ferns, Trilliums, Epimediums, Hostas and woodland bulbs, adding height, texture and a touch of botanical rarity to shaded planting schemes.

A refined and unusual Solomon's Seal whose graceful habit and softly coloured flowers make it a true collector's plant for woodland gardens.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Polygonatum curvistylum rhizomes in autumn or early spring, while the soil is cool, moist and easy to work.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sheltered position in partial shade or full shade with humus-rich, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. It is ideally suited to woodland gardens, shaded borders and beneath deciduous trees.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant rhizomes approximately 5–8 cm (2–3 inches) below the soil surface, ensuring the growing buds face upwards.
  • Spacing: Space plants 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart to allow clumps to develop naturally.
  • Soil Prep: Incorporate plenty of garden compost, leaf mould or well-rotted organic matter before planting to improve soil structure and moisture retention.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season. Once established, water during prolonged dry spells, particularly in late spring and early summer.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Apply a mulch of compost or leaf mould each spring to conserve moisture and feed the soil.
  • Allow stems and foliage to die back naturally in autumn before removing old growth.
  • Leave clumps undisturbed, where they will slowly expand and become increasingly attractive each year.

Top Tip:
Plant alongside Trilliums, ferns, Epimediums and woodland Anemones to create a beautifully layered woodland planting with interest from spring into early summer.
