Begonia ‘Bouton de Rose’ is a true classic and one of the most elegant begonias you can grow in containers. Famous for its large, double, rose-like blooms, it produces beautifully layered flowers (often in rich pink tones) that look like miniature roses sitting proudly above lush green foliage. The effect is luxurious and romantic—perfect for adding a “show garden” feel to patios, doorsteps and shaded seating areas.

This variety is especially lovely in pots where you can appreciate the detail of the blooms up close. It flowers for months with regular feeding and makes an excellent centrepiece plant—either on its own in a decorative container or paired with trailing foliage around the edge. Because the flowers are big and double, a sheltered spot will keep them looking their best for longer, especially in wet weather. If you want a begonia that feels a little bit special and always draws compliments, ‘Bouton de Rose’ is a wonderful choice.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Begonias in late spring, once the risk of frost has passed. You can start them off earlier indoors or in a greenhouse for a head start.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in bright shade or partial shade, sheltered from strong wind and hot midday sun. Begonia ‘Bouton de Rose’ is ideal for patio pots, containers and shaded borders, using a free-draining, moisture-retentive compost.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant at the same depth as in the pot. If supplied as a tuber, plant with the hollow/indent facing upwards and just cover lightly.
  • Spacing: Space 25–30 cm (10–12 inches) apart in borders or larger containers.
  • Soil/Compost Prep: Use a good quality multi-purpose compost and ensure pots have drainage holes. Adding a little perlite/grit helps prevent waterlogging.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep compost evenly moist, but never soggy. Water at the base and avoid splashing the flowers to keep blooms looking their best.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Feed every 1–2 weeks with a high potash feed once flowering begins.
  • Remove faded blooms to encourage more flowers and prevent rot.
  • Protect from frost—lift and store tubers cool, dry and frost-free if overwintering.

Top Tip:
Because the blooms are large and double, keep plants sheltered from heavy rain and strong winds. A protected patio spot helps the flowers stay perfect for longer.
