Begonia pendula Orange brings a real burst of sunshine to baskets and patio pots, with glowing orange, pendulous flowers that cascade in generous waves. It’s a classic trailing begonia that gives a long season of colour, making it ideal for brightening shaded patios, sheltered doorways, and anywhere you want a cheerful splash of warm tones without baking the plant in harsh midday sun.

What makes this begonia so useful is its ability to create a “finished” look quickly—its trailing stems soften the edges of containers and look fantastic combined with trailing greenery or contrasting foliage plants. With regular feeding and steady watering, it will flower continuously through summer, often right up to the first frosts. It’s also a brilliant option for anyone who loves bold colour but doesn’t want a high-maintenance plant—keep it sheltered, keep it fed, and it will reward you all season long.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Begonias in late spring, once the risk of frost has passed. You can start them off earlier indoors or in a greenhouse for a head start.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in bright shade or partial shade, sheltered from strong wind and hot midday sun. Begonia pendula is perfect for hanging baskets, window boxes and patio containers, using a free-draining compost.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant at the same depth as in the pot. If supplied as a tuber, plant with the hollow/indent facing upwards and just cover lightly.
  • Spacing: Space plants 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) apart in larger containers.
  • Soil/Compost Prep: Use good quality multi-purpose compost. Ensure pots have drainage holes and add a little perlite/grit for extra drainage if needed.

Watering:
Water well after planting. Keep compost evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Water at the base and try not to soak the leaves.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Feed every 1–2 weeks with a high potash feed once flowering begins.
  • Remove faded blooms to keep plants tidy and encourage more flowers.
  • Protect from frost—lift and store tubers cool, dry and frost-free if overwintering.

Top Tip:
For the fullest baskets, pinch back early growth lightly to encourage branching, then let it trail and flower freely.
