Strawberry ‘Allegro’ is your head-start to summer—an exceptionally early, heavy-cropping variety that fills bowls weeks before many others. Expect glossy, bright-red, uniform berries with a conical shape and superb flavour: sweet, aromatic and refreshingly juicy, with firm flesh that holds well after picking—perfect for breakfasts, baking and jam.

Vigorous yet tidy, plants smother themselves in white spring blossom before setting abundant fruit. Reliable in the UK climate, ‘Allegro’ thrives in raised beds, allotments, growbags and containers—ideal for patios and small gardens as well as larger patches. It’s self-fertile and easy to grow: give it a sunny, sheltered spot, regular watering and a mulch to keep fruit clean, and you’ll be rewarded with generous early-summer harvests.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant in early spring (March–April) or autumn (September–October) while the soil is moist and workable. Avoid planting during frost or heatwaves.

Where to Plant:
Choose a sunny, sheltered position with well-drained, fertile soil. Avoid planting where strawberries have grown recently to reduce the risk of disease. Great for vegetable beds, grow bags, or large containers.

How to Plant:

  • Spacing: Space plants 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) apart in rows 60 cm (24 inches) apart.
  • Depth: Plant with the crown just above soil level—do not bury it.
  • Soil Prep: Enrich soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting and keep soil evenly moist, especially as the fruit begins to swell. Avoid overhead watering to prevent mould on the fruit.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Mulch with straw or bark in late spring to keep fruit clean and suppress weeds.
  • Remove runners (unless you want to propagate new plants) to conserve energy for fruit production.
  • Feed in spring with a high-potassium fertiliser to support flowering and fruiting.
  • After fruiting, trim back old leaves and tidy up the plants to encourage healthy regrowth.

Top Tip:
Strawberry ‘Allegro’ produces large, flavourful berries early in the season—perfect for picking fresh or using in jams and desserts. Protect ripening fruit with netting to keep birds away, and enjoy sun-warmed strawberries straight from the garden!
