A magnificent and imposing form of Lily-of-the-Valley, Convallaria majalis 'Fortin's Giant' is renowned for producing exceptionally large leaves, stronger stems and larger clusters of fragrant flowers than the traditional species.

This outstanding French selection combines all the charm and intoxicating perfume of classic Lily-of-the-Valley with a much bolder garden presence. In late spring, robust stems rise above lush, broad green foliage carrying generous sprays of elegant, pure white, bell-shaped flowers. The blooms release the rich, sweet fragrance that has made Convallaria a cherished garden favourite for centuries.

'Fortin's Giant' is particularly valuable for creating impact in woodland gardens and shaded borders, where its larger foliage provides excellent ground cover and architectural interest throughout the growing season. The flowers are also excellent for cutting, filling rooms with their unmistakable scent.

Like all Lily-of-the-Valley, it thrives in cool, moisture-retentive soils and gradually spreads to form handsome colonies beneath trees and shrubs. Its combination of vigour, fragrance and larger-than-average flowers makes it one of the finest selections available.

A superb woodland perennial that brings elegance, perfume and a touch of grandeur to the spring garden.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Convallaria pips or crowns in autumn, winter or early spring while dormant. Plant as soon as possible after receipt for the best establishment.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in partial shade or full shade with moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Ideal beneath trees, in woodland gardens and along shaded borders.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant pips so the growing tip sits just below or level with the soil surface.
  • Spacing: Space plants approximately 20–25 cm (8–10 inches) apart to allow room for their larger growth.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with plenty of compost, leaf mould or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Watering:
Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil lightly moist during establishment. Convallaria prefers cool, moisture-retentive soil and should not be allowed to dry out completely.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Apply an annual mulch of compost or leaf mould.
  • Allow foliage to die back naturally in autumn.
  • Established clumps can be divided every few years if required.

Top Tip:
Plant near pathways or seating areas where the larger flower clusters and wonderful fragrance can be fully appreciated during late spring.
