Beautiful, unusual and full of seasonal charm, Colchicum autumnale produces elegant goblet-shaped flowers in soft lilac-pink tones that emerge in autumn, often appearing before any foliage is visible.

Flowering at a time when many gardens are beginning to fade, these delicate blooms bring a welcome burst of late-season colour to borders, lawns and woodland-style planting schemes. The flowers rise directly from the soil on short sturdy stems, creating a striking and almost magical effect in the autumn garden.

Native to meadows and grasslands across Europe, Colchicum autumnale has been cultivated in gardens for centuries and is admired for both its unusual flowering season and naturalistic beauty. The broad foliage appears separately in spring before dying back in early summer.

Perfect for naturalising in grass, woodland gardens, borders and beneath deciduous trees, this easy-to-grow bulb gradually forms attractive clumps over time with very little maintenance.

Elegant and timeless, Colchicum autumnale is ideal for extending seasonal interest well into autumn.

Planting Instructions

When to Plant:

Plant Colchicum bulbs in late summer to early autumn for flowering the same autumn season.

Where to Plant:
Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with well-drained soil. Colchicums are ideal for naturalising in lawns, woodland gardens, borders and beneath deciduous trees.

How to Plant:

  • Depth: Plant bulbs about 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) deep.
  • Spacing: Space bulbs approximately 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) apart.
  • Soil Prep: Improve soil with compost or organic matter before planting. Ensure good drainage to prevent bulb rot.

Watering:
Water after planting to help settle the soil. Once established, Colchicums require very little additional watering except during prolonged dry periods.

Aftercare Tips:

  • Allow spring foliage to die back naturally as this feeds the bulb for future flowering.
  • Avoid mowing naturalised areas until foliage has fully yellowed.
  • Bulbs may be left undisturbed for many years and will gradually form larger clumps.

Top Tip:
Plant amongst low ground cover or grass where the autumn flowers can emerge naturally for a beautiful meadow-style effect.
